  7. Minutes of April 11, 1989

  9. Here are the minutes for the April 11, 1989 meeting of the LAN Manager
  10. MIB subgroup.
  11.  
  12. For the benefit of newcomers, we began with an overview of LAN Manager
  13. and the subgroup's progress to date.
  14.  
  15. We then discussed the issues put forward by Jim Greuel, coming to the
  16. following conclusions:

  19.   1. We felt that we did indeed want to support LAN Manager alerts in
  20.      the first version of the LM MIB.
  21.   2. In order to accomplish (1) in an expedient manner, and avoid
  22.      starting World War III, we decided to adhere strictly to the
  23.      current SMI. Translated, this means:
  24.  
  25.          Do away with the event template.  Show only the objects
  26.          which trigger the events (eg, counters, gauges), and the
  27.          objects associated with them.
  28.          All pertinent information dealing with the conditions which
  29.          trigger events/traps are to be explained in the definition
  30.          portion of the appropriate object templates.
  31.  
  32.   3. All ``event'' descriptions should have examples which show
  33.      implementation under both SNMP and CMOT. For SNMP, either a new
  34.      generic-trap (7) would be proposed, or the enterprise specific trap
  35.      (6) would be used in conjunction with a ``LAN Manager'' enterprise.
  36.   4. We discussed the possibility of representing the objects associated
  37.      with events/traps via tables.
  38.   5. We decided to provide only ``read-only'' objects.  In particular,
  39.      there will be no way of clearing the LAN Manager statistic objects
  40.      via SNMP/CMOT. This is consistent with the definition of the
  41.      statistic-like objects defined in RFC1066.
  42.   6. It was decided to do away with the use of the BITSTRING type,
  43.      replacing it with OCTET STRINGs upon which we would impose a bit
  44.      map interpretation.

  47. Concerning Microsoft's willingness to provide modifications/enhancements
  48. to the LAN Manager Admin API's:  Amatzia read a formal statement from
  49. Microsoft indicating their consent to this, contingent on technical
  50. review and schedule considerations.

  52. Jim Greuel will make the agreed upon modifications to the main body of
  53. the document.  Amatzia Ben-Artzi and Jeff Case volunteered to modify the
  54.

  62. ``event'' section of the document, Amatzia providing CMOT examples, Jeff
  63. SNMP examples.  The goal is to put the revised document on the MIB WG
  64. mailing list as soon as possible, and have it discussed at the May 18
  65. MIB WG meeting.
